Sure. Nobody prevents you from doing that. That "merely" is a more general
but also more advanced option.

The CRAN backports for Ubuntu and Debian complement the offering by their
respective distros _in the same version_.

For normal users: Use this repo.  

For power users: Whatever. As always.
