I suspect a mistyped line. Re-read the README for the proper format.

Here is what I use:

   edd at max:~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/cran.list
   # edd 08 Nov 2009  CRAN via R-Project.org
   #        Apr 2014  switched to RStudio CDN
   deb http://cran.rstudio.com/bin/linux/ubuntu trusty/ 
   edd at max:~$
