Thanks very much for the additional information. It may in the end prove helpful for debugging.

In the intervening time frame, I received an offlist communication from Prof. Ripley, who now believes that there may be an issue with Oracle's 64 bit driver at play and he will need to investigate further.

Unfortunately, he will be unable to look at this for at least a week or so. At that point he will have access to a platform for the local testing of Oracle's 64 bit ODBC driver and associated tools to see if he can better identify the etiology of the problem and go from there as appropriate.
