I understand, and resolving to brute force in a configure (shell or R) script
may be my next out, but note the second point I made.

There *is* an implicit consensus on what we can or cannot use [1]. We we
would be better off by an *explicit* list that should contain pandoc.

[1] Though it may get dicey on particular (La)TeX styles and fonts as we
know, which I now work around as live being short and all by re-rendering
most pdf vignettes and having Sweave just slurp the premade pdf in.
