 From the error message, it looks as though you need

\alias{[,encore,ANY,ANY-method}

and perhaps a corresponding \S4method{} entry.  I don't see why that 
would arise from the setMethod call you give; I would have guessed 3 
"ANY"s, but I don't use S4 much.
