Hi,
Perhaps you wanted to convert dp$rainfall.sampdate and not dp$sampdate like this...
dp$sampdate <- as.character(dp$rainfall.sampdate)
... or even better, take charge of the conversion with format() ...
dp$sampdate <- format(dp$rainfall.sampdate, format = '%Y-%m-%d')
