You probably want to use 'get':

> r1 <- 5
> r2 <- 3
> r3 <- 45
> x <- ls(pattern = '^r.$')
> x
[1] "r1" "r2" "r3"
> lapply(x, get)
[[1]]
[1] 5

[[2]]
[1] 3

[[3]]
[1] 45
