[R] install.packages() can't find install.packages() ?

Have you tried this after starting R in a "clean" workspace?
Or perhaps after starting R --vanilla?

It sounds to me like something is corrupted in your install.packages() 
function --- or possible somewhere else --- which could be induced by 
having some ghosts lurking about in .RData.

(After all, it is getting close to Hallowe'en. :-) )
