You can do something like:
aaa <- function(data, w=w) {
if (class(w) %in% c("integer", "numeric", "double")) {
out <- mean(w)
} else {
out <- mean(data[, w])
}
return(out)
}
(there are some typos in your function you may want to double check, too)
