[R] lme4 package installation

Hello

I've downloaded the tar.gz file of the package "lme4" and when I use the 
coomand:

install.packages("lme4_1.1-8.tar.gz", repos = NULL, type = "source")

appears an error that suspends the installation:

compilation terminated.
make: *** [external.o] Error 1
ERROR: compilation failed for package ‘lme4’

Does anyone know how to fix it? Thank you very much!
