[R] converting a coloumn in a data set to a vector

Try:

dat1 <- read.table(text="x1 x2 x3
 1   5   7
 4   8   9
 8    6  12
 4   8   13",sep="",header=TRUE)
 vec1 <- dat1[,1]
 vec1
#[1] 1 4 8 4
