[R] Problem installing ndf library

[Prof Brian Ripley]

You need to install netcdf, including its development files.  The notes 
you quote are pretty specific about that.  Googling for that leads to

http://packages.debian.org/source/squeeze/netcdf

and it seems you need libnetcdf-dev and libnetcdf6 installed.
