Hi,

I agree with Ista that you need the second option. So long as you don't want to look at interactions between condition and item it shouldn't be a problem that you don't have the same items in each condition. However, it may be difficult to find a main effect of condition that couldn't also be attributed to items within that condition. So long as this isn't an issue for you, you should be fine.

Well, if I understand correctly that actually is the case (that 18
items are "missing" in each condition")
