Yes, that causes a segmentation fault on OSX too
------
> ddply(DF[DF$x<3, ], .(y), nrow, .drop=FALSE)

 *** caught segfault ***
address 0x0, cause 'memory not mapped'

Traceback:
 1: .Call("split_indices", index, group, as.integer(n))
 2: split_indices(seq_along(splitv), as.integer(splitv), attr(splitv, "n"))
 3: splitter_d(.data, .variables, drop = .drop)
 4: ddply(DF[DF$x < 3, ], .(y), nrow, .drop = FALSE)

Possible actions:
1: abort (with core dump, if enabled)
2: normal R exit
3: exit R without saving workspace
4: exit R saving workspace
------------
The problem is in a C function from the plyr package, so you need to take it up the maintainer.
