This extracts the numbers from each string converting them to numeric:
x <- c("Cycle 1 Day 8", "Cycle 12 Day 15")
nums <- strapply(x, "\\d+", as.numeric, simplify = TRUE)
[1,] 1 12
[2,] 8 15
