If I enclose x$i+x$window in parentheses it works:
>> check.max<- function(x){obs.max<- which.max(x$elev[x$i:(x$i+x$window)]);
> obs.max}
x$elev[x$i:x$i+x$window] means:
x$elev[(x$i:x$i)+x$window]
Simple.
