so… cleared out, and now it’s working: Must have been an obscure workspace conflict. Thanks for quick helpful replies

a <- 1:4
assign("a[1]", 2)
> a[1] == 2
[1] FALSE
> get("a[1]") == 2 
[1] TRUE
