[R] How to find position in bin-data?

cut() does what you want:

 > cut(data, bins)
[1] <NA>  (5,7] (1,3] (3,5] (7,9] (3,5] (1,3] (7,9]
Levels: (1,3] (3,5] (5,7] (7,9] (9,11]

 > as.numeric(cut(data,bins))
[1] NA  3  1  2  4  2  1  4

data[1] is NA because of the structure of the intervals.
