Thanks I ran your command but still get the same error message when I run ./configure
configure: error: --with-x=yes (default) and X11 headers/libs are not available

In order to build R-2.13.1 from source with X11, I guess you need to
install X11 develop library. Please try this:
sudo apt-get install libx11-dev
