A few such functions are now available in latticeExtra. E.g.,
library(latticeExtra)
xyplot(1:10~1:10, scales=list(log=T),
yscale.components = yscale.components.log10.3)
xyplot(1:10~1:10, scales=list(log=T),
yscale.components = yscale.components.log10ticks)
