Try this:
column.names<-paste(sample(c("X","Y","Z"),100,TRUE),
sample(c("X","Y","Z"),100,TRUE),
sample(c("X","Y","Z"),100,TRUE),
sample(0:9,100,TRUE),sep="")
column.names[grep("XXX",column.names,fixed=TRUE)]
