Try this. The first returns a Date class object and the second
returns a character string:
> d <- "March-2009"
> as.Date(as.yearmon(d, "%B-%Y"))
[1] "2009-03-01"
> format(as.Date(as.yearmon(d, "%B-%Y")))
[1] "2009-03-01"
