Look at ?ifelse en ?abs, eg :
data_frame$new_column_in_dataframe <- ifelse(stage$julian_day ==
baro$julian_day & abs(stage$time -
baro$hour) <= 30,
stage$stage.cm - baro$pressure, NA )
