[R] hdf files

Are you sure these are hdf5 files? If they are HDF4 files you will not
be able to load them with the hdf5 package. I am not aware of a HDF4
package for R but I might be wrong.

If it is a HDF4 file you might find the conversion utility at
http://www.hdfgroup.org/h4toh5/ useful.

     Cheers,
          Jarle.
