as far as i understood, you're trying to do this:

direction_func <- function(combdframe) {
     ifelse(mean(combdframe==0), -99999,
       sum((sign(mean(combdframe))*combdframe)>0))
}

direction<-apply(combdframe, 1, direction_func)
direction
