A vectorized solution:

vseq <-c(2,3,4)
v <- c(4,2,5,8,9,2,3,5,6,1,7,2,3,4,5)
sum( v[1:(length(v) -2)] == vseq[1] &
v[2:(length(v) -1)] == vseq[2] &
v[3:(length(v) )] == vseq[3]    )
# [1] 1

And a check on relative speed which was also a concern you expressed:

logsum <- function(v,vseq) sum( v[1:(length(v) -2)] == vseq[1] &
v[2:(length(v) -1)] == vseq[2] &
