[R] Installing R on Ubuntu ( 8.10 ) ?

Really?  R has been part of every Ubuntu release. 

So install it from part of the distribution, or use the (usually more
current) CRAN repository for Ubuntu at

      http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/

where a detailed README tells you how to go about this.
