Yeah.  
 
addtable2plot in the plotrix is really close, but, working from within R, I would really like to be able format tables in such a way that they look like they are ready for journal or conference paper publication.  
 
Is addtable2plot in the plotrix the right tool for that or are there other packages that would be better suited?

Not sure if this is what you want, but look at addtable2plot in the plotrix
package.
