Perhaps you'll need to fine tune it, but see here:

R> gregexpr("(\\d+(\\.\\d+)?)", "this Item costs 3.32 Dollars, that

R> gregexpr("(\\d+(\\.\\d+)?)", "this Item costs 3.32 Dollars, that
