[R] Embedding lists in matrices and matrices in lists

Try this:

> M <- matrix(list(list(1, 2), list(m12, m12), list(t(m12)), list(m22, m22, m22)), 2, 2)
> M
     [,1]   [,2]
[1,] List,2 List,1
[2,] List,2 List,3
> M[[1,2]]
[[1]]
     [,1]
[1,]   10
[2,]   10

> M[[2,1]]
[[1]]
     [,1] [,2]
[1,]   10   10

[[2]]
     [,1] [,2]
[1,]   10   10
