Another possibility is to download the xlsReadWrite package in http://treetron.googlepages.com/xlsreadwrite.htm

And use the read.xls() function.

I am using this package without problems.

i advice you to save the file under csv and then use
read.csv2("c:/file.csv",sep=",")
