[R] Plotting a time series

I have data that I read in using:

data<-read.table("RAVK2.obs.data",sep="\t")

'data' looks like this:

when I use plot(data) the plot looks fine except that the plot symbols 
are broken horizontal lines. How do I change the plot symbol? I have tried:

plot(data, type="p")

and I get the same result.
