I can't help with your inquiry generally, but I can address the
issue of ``optional braces''.

Yes. This is correct. If the body of the function doesn't
need braces, you don't *have* to put them in. (They never
hurt, but.) E.g.
foo <- function(x) x^2
works ``just as well as'' foo <- function(x){x^2}
