[R] spherical plots?

Dear List,

I'm wondering whether it is possible to use R to make spherical plots.

I have 3d data: azimuth, elevation and a certain variable Y. 

I want to plot Y in terms of azimuth and elevation such that it seems to be a contour plot overlaid on a sphere (but projected on a plane, of course).
