[R] counting number of "G" in "TCGGGGGACAATCGGTAACCCGTCT"

Seems like you can do:

library("matchprobes")   # on Bioconductor
countbases("TCGGGGGACAATCGGTAACCCGTCT")[,"G"]

The catch is that it only counts A, C, G, and T:s and no other symbols.
