[R] Can R do this ?

If this is about more than a handful files, then it is really painful
to do it with OpenOffice.org or LyX, I guess.

You can use imagemagick, this is fairly standard on Linux. Then it is 
something like this, assuming you have bash:

for f in *.png; do convert $f ${f%png}pdf; done
for f in *.jpg; do convert $f ${f%jpg}pdf; done

Of course this does not vectorise the files....
