The last one can be shortened to:
> c(aperm(array(1:4, c(2,2,6)),c(1,3,2)))
[1] 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 4
And it extends to 38 fairly easily:
> c(aperm(array(1:38, c(2,38/2,6)),c(1,3,2)))
[1] 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 4
3 4 5
