I'm interested to know about your experience.  I use rhel3 and ran
into a similar problem.  BUT it wasn't a problem when I first started
R-2.6.0.  I've looked through archives and found that people had a
similar problem with Gentoo Linux which was fixed by some X.org
rejigging.  But that was with earlier versions of R which never posed
a problem for me (nor for you it would seem).

I suspect that there's a package I updated which has screwed up
things.  If you've only recently installed 2.6.0, I suspect you would
already have the updated (i.e. buggy) package.

Any evidence to support my hypothesis?
