'table()' can compute your desired result in this particular case
(though I don't know if it's what you want in general):
> y <- factor(c("a","b","c")[c(1,1,1,2,2,3,3,3)])
> x <- factor(c("x","y","z")[c(1,2,3,1,2,1,2,3)])
> table(x, y)
y
x a b c
x 1 1 1
y 1 1 1
z 1 0 1
>
If x and y are already columns in a data frame, then just do
> table(X$factor1, X$factor2)
