Use mtext() to write to the outer margins, but remember first to create 
some space there.  For example,

 > par(oma=c(0,0,2,0),mfrow=c(2,2))
 > plot(1)
 > plot(2)
 > plot(3)
 > plot(4)
 > mtext("Main title", side=3, outer=TRUE)
