[R] x-axis labeling between thickpoints

I think you want the 'at', 'labels', and 'tick' arguments of axis().
This should essentially get you what you want:

> hist(rnorm(100), axes = F)
> axis(side = 1, at = -3:3, lab = F)
> axis(side = 1, at = (-3:3)+0.5, tick = F)
