Several different ways. You can look in the Intro to R to learn more:

> my.list <- list(a=matrix(1:9,3), b=1:4, c="this is a string", d=list(1,2,3))
> my.list
$a
     [,1] [,2] [,3]
[1,] 1 4 7
[2,] 2 5 8
[3,] 3 6 9

$b
[1] 1 2 3 4

$c
[1] "this is a string"

$d
$d[[1]]
[1] 1

$d[[2]]
[1] 2

$d[[3]]
[1] 3

> my.list$a
     [,1] [,2] [,3]
[1,] 1 4 7
[2,] 2 5 8
[3,] 3 6 9
> my.list$d
[[1]]
[1] 1

[[2]]
[1] 2

[[3]]
[1] 3

> my.list$d[[2]]
[1] 2
> my.list[[4]][[2]] # same as above
[1] 2

     [,1] [,2] [,3]
[1,] 1 4 7
[2,] 2 5 8
[3,] 3 6 9
