[R] mysterious error on compile R 2.3.1

Getting a very strange error with a new install of R from source on x86;

note that i am using the GCC flags:
CFLAGS=-march=opteron -ffast-math
CXXFLAGS=-march=opteron -ffast-math
any ideas?
