e.g., Bioconductor uses this mechanism, see
http://www.bioconductor.org/docs/install-howto.html, and - not to put
too fine a point on it: Did you consider reading the part of ?source
that says
file: a connection or a character string giving the pathname of the
file or URL to read from.
