The generalized inner product function which I posted in response to
another query earlier today:

can also solve this problem:
f <- function(x, y) length(na.omit(unlist(intersect(x,y)))) > 0
inner(dd[,-1], dd[,-1], f) - diag(nrow(dd)) # inner from cited post
