```do you need something like this:

par(mfrow=c(2, 2))

plot(0:10, 0:10, axes=FALSE, xlim=c(0, 10))
axis(1, at=seq(0, 10, 5))
axis(2)
####
plot(0:10, 0:10, axes=FALSE, xlim=c(0, 10))
axis(1, at=seq(0, 10, 2))
axis(2)
####
plot(0:10, 0:10, axes=FALSE, xlim=c(0, 10))
axis(1, at=seq(0, 10, 1))
axis(2)
