[R] cannot assign dimnames

Dear Dan,
a simple example:
> mat<-matrix(1:6, ncol=3)
> mat
[,1] [,2] [,3]
[1,] 1 3 5
[2,] 2 4 6
> dimnames(mat)<-list(1:2, 1:3)
> mat
1 2 3
1 1 3 5
2 2 4 6
> dimnames(mat)<-list(1:2, letters[1:3])
> mat
a b c
1 1 3 5
2 2 4 6
> dimnames(mat)
[[1]]
[1] "1" "2"
[[2]]
[1] "a" "b" "c"
dimnames need a list!
