It couldn't have been that recent; SCO dropped the most Linux-
relevant portions of its lawsuit back in January.

Further, SCO is under investigation for racketeering in 
Australia.  The "pay us money, because we own Unix" letters 
may be a form of illegal shakedown in Oz.
