what about:

 >  mtdist<- as.matrix(dist(Fbg['Test']))
    dimnames(mtdist) <- list( Fbg[ 'Family' ], Fbg[ 'Family' ] )
    mtdist [ Fbg['Code']=="m" ,Fbg['Code']=="t" ]
