[R] help on R "plot"

I am not sure if I understand your question properly but try this 

par(mfrow=c(1,3))
plot(1:10, 1:10, xlab="A very long label here")
plot(1:10, 1:10, xlab="A very long \n label here")
plot(1:10, 1:10, xlab="A very long \n label here", cex.lab=2)

Also have a look at help("par").
